Tarmacadam, or “Bitmac” as it is sometimes known, is a form of surface that provides excellent longevity whilst looking smooth and sleek. It is generally suitable for forecourts and drives and is designed to be able to handle vehicular traffic as well as pedestrian footfall.
Asphalt, contrary to popular belief, is not the same material as that which Americans use to pave their roads and sidewalks. In the UK it refers to a similar surfacing process to tarmacadam, again suitable for use in areas such as pavements and courtyards. It can also be found beneath the internal flooring of many modern housing. Whilst the two terms mean slightly different things, “tarmacadam” is frequently used to refer to both.
